Black Ties and White Lies by Ila Rose Release Day

Black Ties and White Lies
By
Ila Rose

Happiness is such a suggestive ideal thing; Thomas Jefferson wasn’t far off in referring to it as a pursuit. It’s something we continuously seek; slippery to hold and lost easily, until we turn our backs on it in disgust and shame Giving up and allowing the darkness to claim our soul as we plummet into despairs fathomless chasm.
The time for Ella to come clean has come, can she overcome her inner demons and confess her sins, and indiscretions. Will she own up to the role she played in causing her daughter’s pain? Ella's story is no longer her own, its Kay’s history; who she is and where she came from and why Ella was so heartbreakingly absent from her life for so many years. Tired of fear and sadness coloring her life and decisions, Ella will tell Kay everything; allowing Kay the freedom to either condemn or exonerate Ella's transgressions.

Excerpts...

My head was filled with visions of my skeleton being found or ghosts chasing me, adding to my mounting anxiety. I stopped and leaned heavily against a wall when I heard muffled footsteps quickly approaching. I froze in panic, rooted into that spot, unable to flee even if I wanted to, as a man came towards me with his head bent over a paper and not paying a bit of attention. He passed the statue that I had become before he registered something odd and retraced his steps to stand in front of me.
“What are you doing down here? This area’s off limits you know. Are you new? You don’t look familiar.”
My voice was on lockdown. I tried over and over to speak but not even a croak came out, even though he sounded more amused than angry. “Look at me when I speak to you, please. It’s ridiculous to try to memorize the thread count of every rug in this house. You’d have to work here several lifetimes over before you could even scratch the surface!” A semi hysterical giggle popped out before I could stop it and my face flamed as I studied the shine of his wing tips. He sighed even as his smile grew while he teased, “Ok, if you won’t obey then I’ll have to speak to father and have you fired.” I finally looked up, missing his mischievous tone and interpreting his humor as mockery.
“Please, sir, don’t do that. I need this job! Mother would kill me if…” Oh God, humiliation burned in my gut.
He grinned as he crossed his arms and leaned against the wall, “Ah, she speaks.”
My deceitful heart skipped a beat at the sight of the elegantly dressed young man. He towered over me and my five foot three frame. Golden, thick hair made my fingers itch to comb through the waves. His blue eyes were the same color as his father’s but were so warm my nerves almost evaporated. I think I may have swooned over that smile and would probably dream about it that night.
He was the most handsome man I’d ever seen and not much older than me. And I work for him… Oh no, I work for him!
“I’m sorry, sir, this is my first day sir. I seem to be a bit lost.” Oh God, let me die or at least stop my ignorant tongue from flapping! I slammed my eyes back to the floor as I remembered he had asked me to look at him when he spoke. He chuckled at my confusion. His smile melted something deep within me and ignited a fire that I never knew existed.
“My name is Garrett, Garrett Michaelson.” Chewing my lip as I stared at this handsome man in front of me, I weighed my options as I looked into those amazing eyes…to speak or not?
Finally I relented and sighed, “Ella. My name is Ella Rosen.”

***

Ella paced the floor. If anyone had looked into her darkened room, they may mistake her for a ghost. She moved across the floor in a flowing white dressing gown that covered her toes and made it seem as she glided over the boards. Her lips were moving in silent conversation as her fingers twisted together. Her hair was loose and hung in waves and tears fell from her distressed eyes. She hated the night when the shadows were so thick and daylight seemed ages away. It wouldn’t be long before the nights were endless, cold and lonely once again. She crossed to the windows and barely twitched the gauzy curtains as she moved them aside with shaking fingers to check the shadows again.
They called her name softly as they danced in the yard causing her to gasp and step back in fear, resuming her pacing as the fear gnawed her insides. Ella, Ella, come on out and play. Just for a moment, only a moment. The singsong voice crept under the windows and into her brain, refusing to leave her in peace. No! No, you can’t make me come, leave me be! Leave me alone! Please…please, please. Her pleas went ignored as the shadows spoke to her. Lies mingled with truth until they blurred and she couldn’t pick the two a part. Her shaking hands covered her ears as the tears flowed and her fingers tangled into her hair and pulled hard. She wished the pain would be sacrifice enough. Never enough, Ella, it’ll never ever be enough. You know what we want, Ella. Come play with us, it’s quiet here.
Ella moaned; the compulsion to give in to give up was so strong she found her body moving of its own will as hands reached for the bottles on the dresser. No! Leave me! Please, oh please for once go away! No more, no more, no more. The chant went on inside her tumultuous brain as she resumed the pacing and finger twisting. Twisting her fingers was the only way to keep them from spinning the caps from the bottles that promised blissful quiet and shadow free silence. “Kay can’t know, she can never know. She’ll never speak to me again, she’ll make me leave! I need her and I need my grandbabies so fuck off!” She had no clue that the words actually left her lips until she tasted the salty tears that ran into her open mouth.

***
I did have a slight run in with young Mr. Michaelson today. That’s what we have to call him, the young Mr. Michaelson. So pretentious. Anyway I was carrying a basket of Mrs. Michaelson’s delicates down to the laundry when he came down the hall not paying a bit of attention and ran smack into me! I was so…so…pissed! The basket flew from my hands and both of us landed on our butts and, oh dear Lord, his mother’s giant panties went flying in the air! It was like watching a swarm of demented paratroopers falling from the sky. Only there were no men, just very silky, very large panties and giant brassieres everywhere.

Although River seems perfect, Delilah can’t ignore the gnawing feeling that River is hiding something and that he may just be the biggest imitator of all.

excerpt

Although Delilah hated the way she was feeling, she knew that she wasn’t alone. She had read countless magazine articles about students who tried to take their own lives—and about some who succeeded—just because they couldn’t deal with the torment of high school any longer. For a moment her mind shifted to her friend, Damon. Damon and Delilah met in Spanish class when they were freshmen. They spent an entire semester passing notes to each other, which was probably why she only knew about three Spanish words. Damon was openly gay, and no one at school seemed to have a problem with it. That’s why everyone was so shocked when they heard that Damon hanged himself with a belt in his bedroom closet. Unfortunately, Damon’s parents did have a problem with him being gay, but no one knew about it until it was too late. Delilah had also gone down a bad path a few months ago. She was ashamed to think of it now. Not only was she dealing with problems at school, but she was also having her share of problems at home. She experienced a really weak moment shortly after her father moved out. Susan was going off on one of her rants about communicating with Darcy in the afterlife, and Joe just couldn’t take it anymore. Every time Delilah heard them fighting, she blamed herself. She was aware that her parents knew she was the one responsible for Darcy’s death. “D, are you all right? You look like you’re a million miles away.” Without waiting for a response, Susan continued. “Anyway, I think it’s very commendable that you want to focus on college, but please don’t let anyone take away your special high school moments. You should be thinking about fun things like your senior prom.” I can’t believe she even said the P word, Delilah thought. She had finally made peace with the idea of not going to her senior prom. Why did she have to bring that up? “I’ve told you a million times that I don’t want to go to prom and I don’t want to walk at graduation. I just want my diploma mailed to me.” “D, honey, I know how you’re feeling betrayed and hurt right now, but please don’t let these girls get the better of you. You don’t want to look back when you’re old like me and have regrets.” “Mom, let’s just drop it,” Delilah said, taking one last gulp of her iced tea. “I just worry about you. I want you to be happy.” “Then just leave this alone,” Delilah said crushing the plastic cup in her hand and walking toward the garbage can. “Are you sure that you don’t want anymore pizza?” Susan said, trying to change the subject. “No, thank you.” “Then have your doughnut. I can put on some tea and we can talk.” The thought of touching a doughnut made Delilah feel sick. “No thanks, Mom, I just want to finish my homework, take a shower, and get to bed.” “OK, I’ll finish cleaning up. I’ll wrap the rest of those slices in some foil so your father can—” she stopped herself. “Force of habit,” she said, looking up teary-eyed. “I keep thinking that he’s going to walk through that door.” “I’m sure he’ll come home again soon. He probably just needs some time alone,” Delilah said, trying to sound optimistic. As Delilah walked back to her room, she thought about how her dad better come home soon. The last time she went to visit him she noticed that he was acting strangely. It reminded her of an article she read in Cosmopolitan that said when a man was cheating he might start to exhibit certain behaviors. One of the things it mentioned was that he might start worrying about his appearance more. He may buy new clothes, start wearing a new brand of cologne, or restyle his hair, which in her father’s case wasn’t necessary because he was bald. Another thing she remembered reading was that a man may start to hide things like his cell phone from his wife, in case he receives messages, texts, or misses calls from the other woman. Note to self: if Dad starts sporting a new wardrobe, wearing different cologne, or hiding his cell phone, he’s probably messing around. Later that night, after she showered and dried her hair, Delilah thought about the mystery man she met earlier. She wondered what his name was and wished that she had someone to discuss it with. She felt so lonely. Usually Charlotte would be the first person she would call about something like this. Things were never the same between the two of them after they started high school and became friends with the Imitators. Delilah wished they had never met Rachael Nappi. She was a jealous, evil girl who would do almost anything to get her way. Delilah began to think back to when everything started to go downhill. With a tendency to replay things over and over again in her mind—an unhealthy habit that often brought on panic attacks, she ruminated over the details of her high school drama, and came to the same conclusion that she always did. The only person she had to blame for this whole situation was herself.

I walked over and pulled the curtain back and stopped stunned. I didn’t want to see him or speak to him, but here he was in my ER. Deciding to keep it professional, I stepped into the small space and pulled the curtain closed and reached for the chart sitting on the end of the bed.

“I’m Dr. Jackson. They say you’ve been having headaches and dizzy spells?” I looked up at him and saw that he was smiling. “So help you, Rick, if you’re wasting my time right now I will give them a reason to admit you and it won’t be pleasant.”

“You weren’t answering my calls or texts.”

“So, there’s nothing wrong with you then.”

“Lu, please hear me out.”

“I have actual patients who need to see me.” He stood up and came over to me, taking my hand but I pulled it away before he could get a good grip on it.

“I was out of line.”

Becoming Us by Amy Daws Cover Revel

Ever read a great love story and wish that you could read about the couple before they found each other?

So did author, Amy Daws!

Becoming Us.....the sequel PREquel to, A Broken Us

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000040_00004]

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000040_00004] Prepare yourself for Brody and Finley....college days. Add to your Goodreads To Be Read Lists! ---> Becoming Us

Synopsis:

Finley has been grabbing coffee at Chaz's C-Store every morning for over a year. As a senior at K-State, she's found her groove on campus and not much can shake her. When basketball God, Jake LaShae, strolls into Chaz's, with his tall, broad, and lean bod...he gives Finley's dreams material for weeks. Jake appears to only want a friendship, but Finley thinks if she's patient, it'll turn into more. Then, scandalously hot, Brody, stumbles into her path, barefoot no less. Finley thinks his silly but sexy mannerisms might just be what she never knew she wanted. Becoming Us takes you on a journey through all the fun and crazy drama that happens when you're a senior in college...and falling in love.

Quick Interview With the Author:

Why did you decide to write a sequel, PRE-quel? Besides the fact that I don’t think 99.9% of the things I do through? Well, the fact is, A Broken Us was a story in my head that I was aching to tell. I was ready to write it! So I did…in like two weeks. It was madness. It’s is an epic love story that begins when Brody and Finley are already many years into a relationship. But of course (title gives it away here), the story starts with a break up. So it’s about Finley’s journey to finding true love again. So it still reads like a wonderful, suspenseful, twisty, turny stand-alone love story! So, I released it. And it has been AWESOME hearing how much people love it! The reviews are amazing. It’s my debut novel, I’m incredibly proud of it. Then what happened? Then this weird voice in the back of my head (that sounded NOTHING like Gollum from Lord of the Rings, I swear) kept saying…college, college, COLLEGE. Go back to college! Write their back-story. Give me more! What happened with Jake and Olivia? What was Brody and Finley’s first date like? All of that! I wanted to tell it. So that’s why I decided to write a PREQUEL. So what book should readers read first? Either one. That’s the beauty of writing A Broken Us first…you’re most definitely not missing anything in A Broken Us, because “anything” wasn’t even written yet! If that makes sense. Both books will be great as stand alones. You can start with A Broken Us and then jump right in to Becoming Us. I’ll still include twists and turns and suspense and excitement. Heartbreak. The whole nine. I love it all! Which story was easier to write? A Broken Us…for sure. The idea just poured out of me. Becoming Us has been a bit more challenging, only because I’ve had to become younger in my mind. Writing Brody and Finley in the New Adult genre needs to sound a bit different than when they were 25 in A Broken Us. But it’s all still fun! What’s next for you? I’m going to finish up my memoir series, Chasing Peace, the SEQUEL (I did that one right…LOL!) to Chasing Hope. Then I have spin off book ideas/characters in mind for A Broken Us! Hint, hint…Leslie & Theo….and of course, the sexy Liam!

Excerpt:

I storm out of my apartment frustrated at Angela and in desperate need of air. I can’t keep doing this crap to myself. Tormenting myself over what Jake is thinking and why we’re no longer speaking. I mean, we go from being practically best friends to mere acquaintances. This makes no sense. I did nothing wrong. I look up when I hear a door slam from across the parking lot and see a guy rushing down the steps of the upper level apartment that sits kiddy-corner from my building. My eyebrows knit together as he pads across the parking lot straight toward me. “Hey,” he says looking up at me and holding a half empty black trash bag. “Um, hi,” I reply figuring he’s going to ask me where the dumpster is. “You’re Finley right?” “Yeah, that’s me,” I reply feeling slightly surprised. He looks familiar. I know I’ve seen him around campus before but I’ve never spoken to him. I look him up and down and feel a stirring in my abdomen. He’s somehow managed to pull off comfortably sexy. I didn’t even know those two words could go together. He’s wearing a loose pair of athletic shorts and a white t-shirt that shows a nicely sculpted body underneath. Jesus, this guy has something. My eyes continue traveling downward and see that he’s completely barefoot. My excited perusal is momentarily distracted as I think about the nasty things that go down in this parking lot. No shoes is simply not safe. “You work in the computer lab right? In the business building?” he asks scratching the back of his head. He has dark brown hair that looks like it has a natural curl to it, but it’s cut short on the sides. The top is slightly longer, long enough to yank on. Woah…where did that thought come from? “Yeah! In the business building,” I answer and silently chastise myself because he just said business building. Get your shit together Finley. The corners of his mouth turn down like he’s trying to contain a laugh. I absolutely like that look. I need to find more ways to make this man conceal laughter because it is hot as hell. “You live here?” he asks changing hands with his garbage bag. “Yep, that building.” I turn around and gesture back behind me. “I just moved here this semester. I live with my buddy, Mark. His roommate bailed on him, so he needed someone to fill the space. I was in a month-to-month lease further off campus, so it worked out for me to move in.” “That explains why I’ve not really seen you here.” He tries to contain his laughter again and I get a good look at his eyes and have to take a big gulp of air to calm myself. His eyes are this gorgeous navy blue. They remind me of a really great dark denim wash. Those eyes, his dark, curly hair, and his creamy complexion make one delicious package. How have I over-looked this guy for so long? “Where are you headed?” he asks and I see a twinge of nervousness fleet over his face. “Chaz’s, I’m gonna grab a coffee or something. Honestly my roommate was just driving me nuts.” “Cool, mind if I go with you?” he asks. I glance down at his feet and look back up and my eyes collide into his sheepish smile. Another adorable look I must make him do over and over. “Yeah, I, uh, should probably go grab some shoes.” He gestures for me to follow him and I can’t help myself. I follow.

EXCERPT

Pounding music flowed over Isadora Starling as she walked into her bar, Shenanigans. Only one thing was on her mind, finding someone who would take her home and rock her world. She was smoking hot and she knew it. Taking note of every man whose head turned in her direction, she emphasized the already-seductive sway of her hips as she sashayed to the bar with purpose. As usual, her eyes kept drifting back to the only man in the place who made her mouth water. Unfortunately, her best friend was not on the menu. She slid into a booth and turned toward her business partner, Lana, one of the few women she truly trusted. Lana’s molten silver eyes landed on her. A smirk twisted her lips. “Back so soon?” Isa lifted a shoulder in a shrug before stating, “I’m on a mission.” Perusing the sultry make-up and her come-ravish-me outfit, Lana snorted. “I can see that. What are you drinking?” “Double Grey Goose, straight up.” “One of those nights?” There was a grimace on her face. Isa responded with a one fingered salute before turning back to the crowd with the intention of finding a man. Lana cut in with, “I still think you should drag him home and get each other out of your systems.” By him, she meant Isa’s best friend, Toryn Flame. More than gorgeous, he was fucking beautiful, masculine perfection. His dazzling blue topaz eyes were lined in guyliner, not that his eyes needed any help attracting attention with his ten-mile long lashes. Silky black hair was teased up in a sexy tousle calling to her fingers. The man was a sex god, in snug leather pants and half-buttoned black silk shirt open far enough to display his sculpted chest and the beginning of washboard abs. Forbidden, though she had a never-ending supply of fantasies starring Toryn. The current was her craving to lick every ridge of muscle on her way down to the golden zipper straining over an impressive bulge she wished she could ignore. They were firmly stuck in the friend zone. He didn’t see her that way, and despite the fact he was sensuality walking, she wasn’t supposed to want him. Frustrated, she turned back to Lana with a cold stare. “Have you forgotten he prefers men? Last time I checked,” she looked down and shook her tits for emphasis, “I have all the wrong parts. Besides, he’s my friend, my best friend and he,” she glanced back to watch Toryn tongue-fuck his boytoy, “is all over his man, Leon.” One scarlet brow rose in challenge. “Bullshit, I’ve seen him take women home.” “Please, when was the last time? Tiffany? And that rare occurrence was over a year ago.” Lana’s mouth dropped open, “Oh my god, you are fucking blind, Isadora. He’s only with Leon to distract himself from you.” With a glare, Lana slid the vodka to her. Isa would give anything for that to be the truth. Forcing the desperate sentiment from her mind, she took the shot in a single gulp, causing Lana to grimace. Driving her point home, Isa nodded back to the two hottest men in the place. “Toryn is with Leon. Has been for nearly two months, which is some kind of record for him.” Actually, they had been dating exactly seven weeks, which was damn near a miracle. Aside from Leon, he hadn’t been with a single person more than twice since she’d met him nearly ten years ago. Somehow his lack of commitment made her want him all the more. She always loved a challenge, and secretly wished she could be the one to snare him permanently. Of course, if she told Lana she was counting the days Toryn stayed with Leon, it would prove her point. A point Isa was going to deny until her desire finally died. With a devilish smirk, Lana shrugged. “He’d dump him for you in a heartbeat.” A glance back at Toryn easily reminded her how wrong Lana was. Toryn was grinding his hips into Leon who was hungrily kissing down Toryn’s throat. They were too hot and heavy for their public display of sexual chemistry to merely be a distraction. “Then why is he taking Leon home tonight? And don’t tell me he’s not. Do you see them?” Isadora pointed back at them with a wicked grin. It was a gorgeous sight. Licking her lips and watching like every other woman, and most of the men, in the nearly anything goes bar, she nodded. “Oh, I do, but you don’t see the way he looks at you. Like he’s making love to you with his eyes. When you aren’t watching Toryn, he always stares at you.” Lana filled the shot glass. In all the years they’d been friends, Toryn had never made a move, so Lana was wrong, very depressingly wrong. Isa slammed back the second dose and glared back at Lana. “You’re full of shit. Pour me another.” “I’m not. I still say you’re fucking blind,” Lana taunted as she refilled the glass. “If he wasn’t so hung up on you, I would make a move on him.” That hurt. Wait… what? Hung up on me? Yeah, might need to have her committed. Isa took another glance at Toryn and Leon, then grinned at Lana. “If you can pry him from Leon, he’s all yours.” Thankfully, Lana changed the subject. “Where’s Mike?” Well-intentioned, maybe, but her new topic wasn’t much better. Isa downed the third shot before answering, “Don’t know. Don’t care. Of course it would be a hell of a lot easier to get laid if he were around.” He was her favorite fallback romp in the sack. “You torture that poor man. If you’d let him, he’d fall in love with you.” Which was exactly the reason she hadn’t called and was attempting to avoid him… though in desperate times... Mentally shaking herself, she quipped, “We don’t work as a couple. Sure, explosive in bed, awesome on the dance floor, but that is where our good chemistry ends. We would drive each other batshit crazy—and I’m not talking about the scorch the sheets way—in a matter of days. Not to mention the fact Roxy hates my fucking guts.” “Only because you’re stringing her brother along. Plus, she has a valid point. I’m still convinced you fell for Toryn years ago. Like two seconds after you met him.” She was right, but Isa wasn’t going there. “Go to hell.” “Only when you join me.” Isa slid the empty glass at Lana and batted her lashes. “Anyone I should consider?” With an accusatory glare, she answered, “Plenty of them. Except, don’t take the hot blond home.” She glanced down at the end of the bar for about the hundredth time since Isa sat down. All Isa saw was the healthy fall of shiny blond hair, way too long and perfect to be on any man’s head. “I don’t go for blonds.” Isa smirked before turning toward the crowd. Of its own accord, her gaze landed on Toryn, who winked at her. Lana pulled her back to reality with bite in her tone. “Knowing you, you’ll take him home to spite me.” Isa spun back around, her hands landing on the counter as her eyes narrowed. “I would not. When was the last time?” Her eyes narrowed to slits. “Last week, when you took Reese home.” “Oh,” she shrugged sheepishly, “that hardly counts. You didn’t warn me beforehand. If you had simply told me, I would have found someone else.” It was the truth, Isa never meant to hurt anyone, and especially not her friends. There had been plenty of other options. She honestly hadn’t realized Lana was interested. “Why don’t I believe you?” she muttered. The question stung. Of course, her payback sucked. Lana turned around and hired the guy the very next day, even after Isa begged her not to. “I’m not selfish, Lana. I wouldn’t do that to you,” she whined. “Hmph,” Lana didn’t look convinced, but a smirk formed as she looked over Isa’s shoulder. Isa fought back a smile as she felt Toryn’s approach. He had a presence she could feel and as much as she hated her weakness, it felt good to have him close. Toryn leaned his long hard body against hers. Lana grinned as if her point was made. One corner of Isa’s mouth lifted. “I would be more worried about Toryn taking Blondy home.” “Bitch,” she gasped. “Grey Goose?” Toryn licked his full lips as his brow cocked. “One of those nights, Isa?” Her eyes nearly rolled out of her head, “Okay, everyone stop! I had a long day, and I’m horny as hell. It’s not like I’m driving home. No more judging. Just let me find a man for the night.” The guy sitting next to her turned with a smile that chilled her blood. His deep blue eyes seemed wrong, his skin too pale, almost blue. She’d seen him before, but couldn’t place where. Isa glared back. “Not you.” Amusement danced through his eyes as they dropped to his drink with a chuckle. Toryn grinned at Lana. “Two Loves and one is for my sweet Isadora.” His eyes held a mischievous sparkle. Isa snorted. “Is that so?” “Don’t argue,” he purred in a way that made her want to scratch her nails down his back while riding him into the night. With a groan, she smiled back at Lana and tossed down enough cash to cover her vodka and the Loves, plus a generous tip. “Where’s Leon?” Avoiding answering, Toryn quickly finished the drink and placed his empty glass with a purposeful thunk on the counter. “Let’s dance.” She let the question slide and followed his lead after finishing her cocktail. Maybe she had a bit too much, too fast, because the world tilted. Still, she managed to walk straight. “Leon won’t be jealous?” “Nope, he plans to join us soon.” She could feel his eyes caress down her body and back up. “He told me to tell you that you’re on fire tonight.” “He always says that.” He pulled her close and his lips grazed over her ear. “Only because it’s true.” The warmth of his breath and rumble of his voice only heightened the ache between her legs. Such a damned tease. And if he didn’t do it with everyone, she might think he really felt something for her.
